Data and information is highly distributed and is growing within organizations. While organizations have moved to content management and document management systems, the lack of a single platform where every digital asset can be searched increases the risk of duplication and lost productivity in already fast paced organizations. A corporate-wide search application is still elusive for most organizations.
Couple of key factors have contributed to this state:
#1 Changes in employee behavior
While newer systems have replaced legacy processes, the changes needed for employee behavior to adopt the new processes have lagged behind or have fallen offtrack shortly after the new systems are launched. IT departments are great at implementing new technologies but adoption of these technologies require the users to change behavior. While training users addresses some aspects of change, usability or lack thereof precludes many users from full adoption.
#2 Growing pains with the Digital economy
Most organizations want to implement solutions that are in tune with the new Digital economy. The cost of user change and the risk to their existing processes have been high, preventing these organizations from growing effectively with the new way of doing business. Mobility solutions and social networks are rising within organizations but are still limited in user experience.
#3 Lack of value in existing solutions
Back in the 90’s, the affordability of search technologies was out of reach for most companies as they were mostly proprietary in nature. After 2000, we had a tremendous growth of open source based search, however open source search still requires a lot of customization hours and consultants. Showing value in search is still limited to certain industry sectors where there is an urgency for finding information to save costs or produce artifacts or there is risk to the lack of search.
SearchBlox is affordable and demonstrates value for many organizations. Both IT and the business departments have a stake in search since it solves both business and technology challenges.
