With the constant feedback of “I can’t find anything on my intranet” within organizations, it may be time to think about an SEO strategy for your Intranet. With Google Search Appliance being used in a number of organizations, we all know by now that Google or not, intranet search has a bad rep when it comes to search. There are 2 popular streams of thought when it comes to the intranet : do better on the content aka an SEO strategy for your content or fix your search engine!
SEO for your Intranet content
While it is hard to justify hiring an SEO associate for your intranet to ensure your most relevant content is highlighted or optimized for search, employee communication teams and content authors struggle with this challenge of cleaning up old content versus writing new information. Most organizations I have consulted with are challenged with the volume of clean-up required for optimized search on the intranet and take the short-cut by using search technology as is popular to do but fail to go back and set guidelines to follow on optimizing the content itself.
Fix your search engine
The quorum within an organization is generally around finding search that can deal with the mess and yet bring valid search results back. Typically Google has fallen short especially when it comes to enterprise search since their engines have been tuned for web search with a large corpus of content with hyperlinks. In most organizations, there is a lot of orphan or stand alone documents which may not necessarily be linked. Fixing search in your organization requires more than just out of the box search results in most cases as the content and context drive search relevance for the users.
While we need to have reasonably optimized content and a great search engine, in my experience search relevance has to be defined in better terms to the end users and a bit of education is also required for the end users to search using better terms and search operators including boolean, wildcard, proximity and fuzzy operators.
